Mallorca (also spelled Majorca) is located in the western Mediterranean Sea - about 170km (105 miles) east of Barcelona. Off the eastern coast of mainland Spain, the name originates from Classical Latin being the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands. A Backpacker’s Guide to Visiting Mallorca: • Location & Access: All international flights land at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI); connecting hubs include Barcelona (BCN), Madrid (MAD), or London (LGW/STN). Private shuttle, rental car, or public buses from the airport terminal can reach either Palma City Center or Coastal towns or beaches. • Best Views & Parking: Mirador Es Colomer: This Observation deck offers a panoramic view of a 200-meter vertical limestone cliff, and turquois waters of the Mediterranean. Dedicated parking lot available next to the main road. Santuari de Sant Salvador: A historic mountaintop shrine at 510 meters elevation presenting a 360 panoramic view across half of the island. Plenty of parking at the top of the mountain road. Castell de Bellver: A 14-century Gothic castle with a 360 degree view over the city of Palma and the Bay of Palma. On-site parking at the base of the circular castle grounds. Mirador de Ricardo Roca: An observation deck overseeing forested cliffs, green valleys and the western coastline of the Serra de Tramuntana. Parking spaces available next to the viewpoint. • Best Time & Seasons: Spring (March–May): Best for hiking and cycling. The cooler temperatures averages around 18°C–24°C (64°F–75°F). Summer (June–August): Best for the beaches and swimming. The waters are warmest, but most crowded. Hot temperatures averages around 28°C–33°C (82°F–91°F). Fall (September - November): Best for hiking, cycling and swimming. Mountain temperatures ranges about 19°C–29°C (66°F–85°F). Warm enough to swim up to October. Winter (December - February): Most hotels and facilities are closed for the season. Temperatures falls to 14°C–16°C (57°F–60°F). Lowest rates and peaceful surroundings. Nearby Attractions: • Palma Cathedral (La Seu): A 14th century Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral with impressive architecture. Breathtaking landmark along the waterfront. • Royal Palace of La Almudaina: Historical palace of Moorish and Gothic styles. The interior features magnificant stone archways, grand staircases, and vaulted ceilings. • Fundació Miró Mallorca: Art museum presenting Spain artist Joan Miro's work and his former studio.
