Sewing an Explorer’s Skirt | A Vintage Adventure Inspired by The Mummy

Hello everyone and welcome to a new video! Ready for adventure? In this sewing vlog, I’m making a vintage-inspired explorer’s skirt. In my never ending saga to populate my wardrobe with brown skirts - haha - I come to you today with a long overdue project. Imagine: high brown boots with lacing, a brown skirt with front buttons, a loose white shirt, and a constant dishevelled look. I feel like this reflects my true self quite well! I'll be channeling the adventurous, bookish aesthetic of Evie O’Connell from The Mummy (1999). Think archaeology, old maps, and a dash of vintage glamour: all stitched together on the sewing table. I remember watching as a child in the peak of my obsession with archaeologists. Having always been interested in history, I always resonate with characters in these roles: librarians, archaeologists, historians. Though I have not ended up an archaeologist, I have ended up a niche brand of historian, and therefore feel like embracing this side of me... visually too! This project is about more than just sewing: 🧭 Creating a practical but stylish vintage aesthetic skirt 🧭 Blending cinematic inspiration with wearable design 🧭 Exploring how sewing can bring a little adventure into everyday life As I mentioned in the intro, this is not historically accurate or trying to pin down a specific decade or century - simply a *vintage inspired look*. I used images from the 1890s, 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s as inspiration, and I used my most beloved skirt pattern which is a combination of a historical 1890s and 1900s skirt draft. I had 3 m of 100% brown striped cotton (of which I still have plenty left over, hopefully to make a cute matching waistcoat!), so more likely 2 m or so are needed, depending on your desired length. I used the same length of a polycotton plain fabric I had in my stash as interlining, to give my very thin brown cotton some more body. You will also need matching thread and 10-15 buttons, depending on the size of the button and the length of the skirt. I think I will put this pattern on my Patreon, if you're interested!
