Scoliosis affects the spine and the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tissues. When the spine curves unnaturally, it causes muscle imbalances, with one side becoming weak from underuse and the other overused and sore. This imbalance, while not the cause of scoliosis, is a symptom that worsens with progression. The severity of scoliosis ranges from mild to very severe, with more severe cases introducing greater asymmetry and uneven forces to the body.
Scoliosis-related muscle imbalance impacts movement, including gait, trunk, and shoulder mobility. Proprioception is disrupted, affecting body awareness and balance, while tasks requiring symmetry become more difficult. Children often adapt well, but adults may face significant challenges as imbalances worsen over time.
Addressing scoliosis is the first step in managing muscular imbalance. Reducing the Cobb angle, which measures curvature severity, can alleviate symptoms. Treatments include scoliosis-specific exercises (SSEs) tailored to the individual’s curve to strengthen and lengthen affected muscles, neuromuscular reeducation to improve brain-body communication and posture, and comprehensive care combining therapies to restore balance. While complete symmetry may not be achievable, reducing the curve significantly improves muscle function and posture.
Reducing scoliosis curves through conservative treatments is key to minimizing muscular imbalance. By addressing the root cause, patients can experience improved alignment, posture, and quality of life.
