The Akrylykz - Smart Boy (1980)

Released in 1980, “Smart Boy” was an early single from Hull ska band The Akrylykz, whose line-up included saxophonist and vocalist Roland Gift, later frontman of Fine Young Cannibals. Recorded at Cargo Studios in Rochdale, the track combines energetic ska rhythms, punchy horns and the youthful urgency of Britain’s burgeoning ska revival and 2 Tone era. Originally issued alongside “Spyderman” on independent label Red Rhino, the record attracted radio support from John Peel and was subsequently picked up by Polydor, which reissued “Smart Boy” as the A-side in March 1980. With its lively brass-driven sound and unmistakable ska pulse, “Smart Boy” remains a little-known gem of the British ska revival and a fascinating early recording featuring the future voice of Fine Young Cannibals.
