The Searchers: The Making of an America Legend, by Glenn Frankel. In 1956 John Ford made The Searchers, a Western based on Alan Le May's 1954 novel, which was itself based on events from 1836, when Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanches. Frankel's investigation of this legendary—even archetypal—episode from the white conquest of the American West leads him to fresh assessments of both the country's foundational myths and Ford's enduring classic.
