Exploring Bucharest With Kids!

We spent a week quietly falling in love with Bucharest before we even turned the camera on — and this video is us finally showing you why. We started the afternoon stepping straight out of our Old Town accommodation and into a city that immediately felt alive in a way we hadn't quite anticipated. Electric buses humming past ornate 19th-century facades, locals spilling out of cafes onto cobblestone streets, and this overwhelming sense that we'd stumbled into somewhere genuinely special that most travelers just fly over on their way somewhere else. Bucharest had been giving us good vibes all week, and this afternoon was no different. From there we wandered down Lipscani Street, the heartbeat of the Old Town. There's something wonderfully chaotic about it — karaoke bars sitting next to craft coffee shops, tourists mixing with locals, street energy that feels organic rather than performed for visitors. The kids loved it. We loved it. It's the kind of street you just slow down on without really meaning to. Then came Cărturești Carusel, and honestly, this place alone might be worth the trip to Bucharest. Six floors of books, art, and design inside a beautifully restored 19th-century building — we walked in and all four of us just stopped and looked up. There's a Dracula section , a rooftop cafe with views over the Old Town, and a basement level full of vinyl records that had me flipping through crates longer than I should have. The kids each picked out a new book before we could even think about lunch, which tells you everything about the place. Lunch, though — that took a little longer to sort out than planned. We had a restaurant in mind, showed up at 12:30pm, and were politely told they were still cleaning. Not quite ready for guests yet. So instead of standing around, we followed a sign down a narrow lane and found ourselves inside a monastery that dates back to 1724, with frescoed walls, a hidden courtyard, and a lapidarium full of old stone carvings half-tucked beneath the archways. It was one of those completely unplanned detours that ends up being the thing you talk about for days. We circled back to eat once the restaurant had pulled itself together. And the meal was worth every minute of waiting. We settled into a rustic tavern — low ceilings, warm lighting, the kind of place that smells like garlic and history — and ordered our way through what turned out to be a genuinely great Romanian lunch. Vegetable cream soup, a wonderfully sour meatball soup called ciorbă, a crispy schnitzel, and then the waiter brought out papanași for dessert — a traditional Romanian fried doughnut dish — and it was enormous. We were not prepared for the size of it. And just when we thought we were done, he came back with a complimentary shot of sour cherry digestif for the grown-ups and a grin like he knew exactly what he was doing. It was perfect. The afternoon walk through the Old Town gave us a little bit of everything. We stopped to chat with a street vendor whose cockatiel sat happily on our shoulders, discovered that the National History Museum was closed for the day (classic), and stumbled onto a narrow lane decorated overhead with hundreds of colorful umbrellas. What struck us most, though, was the city itself — grand restored buildings sitting right next to crumbling, abandoned ones, like Bucharest is mid-sentence in its own renovation story. It's raw in places, and we found that strangely beautiful. We ended the day at Cișmigiu Gardens, a sweeping public park that's been here since the 1800s, and it was exactly what we all needed. There's a lake, a stone bridge, flower beds in full color, and a playground that was absolutely packed with families doing exactly what we were doing — just being in a city that had quietly won them over. We came into this city not really knowing what to expect. It's complicated and beautiful and underrated in a way that feels like a gift — a proper European city that hasn't been smoothed out for tourists yet.
