Earth's Largest Single Gold Deposit Shouldn't Exist

#gold #geology #uzbekistan Beneath the flat grey gravel of Uzbekistan's Kyzylkum Desert sits Muruntau, the largest single gold deposit ever discovered on Earth. Open pit mining began in 1967, the first bar was poured in 1969, and the hole is now the biggest gold open pit on the planet by physical size. Total endowment, mined plus remaining, is usually put at upward of 170 million ounces, something over 5,000 tonnes. We start with the record, because it is routinely misquoted. Muruntau is the largest single DEPOSIT. South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin is the largest gold PROVINCE and has produced far more metal, on Frimmel's estimate around 40% of all known gold, but it is dozens of separate reefs across roughly 300 km of crust, not one continuous ore system. Both records are real and they are not the same record, so the distinction is made in the first minute rather than in a pinned comment. The word discovered matters too: largest deposit anyone has found is not the same claim as largest that exists. Then the scale, anchored physically. Gold is 19.32 times denser than water, so those 5,000-odd tonnes cast as one block make a cube about 6.5 m on a side, roughly two and a half percent of the ~220,000 t humanity has ever mined, itself only a 22 m cube. Getting it out means moving rock by the billion tonnes: the JORC audited reserve still in the pit is 1,210 Mt at 1.09 g/t Au, so a tonne of ore, about the mass of a small car, carries roughly one paperclip of metal. The discovery is a story about looking for the wrong thing. In 1958 three Soviet geologists, Mordvintsev, Khamyshkin and Luk'yanov, working the Soviet uranium reconnaissance of Central Asia, sampled the desert on a grid and hit an enormous arsenic anomaly. Arsenic is a pathfinder element: the smoke, not the fire. On age we are explicit rather than tidy: Re-Os on arsenopyrite gives 287.5 +/- 1.7 Ma and Sm-Nd on scheelite 279 +/- 18 Ma for the gold stage, while the ~400 Ma figure often attached to Muruntau is a mica cooling age for the host rock, not the ore. Whether the system fired once or pulsed across tens of millions of years is still argued, and we say so.
