Edward was born to inherit a crown, but at twenty-four he was a hostage. Freedom brought a victory for his family and the beginning of a lifetime spent trying to make his authority hold.
Follow Edward I from childhood at Westminster through crusade, marriage, the conquest of Wales and wars in Scotland. Eleanor of Castile, Llywelyn, Wallace and Robert Bruce share a story in which each apparent settlement leads to another journey, another demand and another conflict. Along the way, his decisions change the lives of families far beyond the royal household.
A calm life story for bedtime, with George's narration and slowly changing historical illustrations. Part of our kings series.

The familiar horse-racing account of Edward's escape is presented as a story whose exact details are uncertain. No dependable casualty total is given for Berwick, and later legends about Eleanor's role in Edward's recovery and a newborn Prince of Wales are not used.
