Have you ever wondered how much money one acre of apples can earn in Kenya? With the growing demand for fresh, locally produced apples, grafted apple farming is becoming one of the country's most promising fruit enterprises. In this video, we'll explore the earning potential of one acre of apples, focusing on two premium varieties—Fuji and Granny Smith.
One of the greatest advantages of planting grafted apple seedlings is early fruiting. Unlike seed-grown apples that may take 6–8 years to produce, grafted apple trees begin bearing fruits in just 2–3 years. At Farmers Trend Limited, our apples are grafted onto M9 rootstock, which encourages early production, better yields, manageable tree size, and easier orchard management.
Fuji Apple is one of the world's sweetest apple varieties. It produces attractive red fruits with crisp, juicy flesh and excellent shelf life, making it highly sought after by supermarkets, hotels, fruit vendors, and fresh produce markets. Its exceptional sweetness makes it a favorite for fresh consumption.
Granny Smith Apple is famous for its bright green skin, firm texture, and refreshing tart flavor. It is excellent for fresh eating, juices, salads, baking, pies, and food processing. Its long shelf life and ability to withstand transport make it one of the best commercial apple varieties.
With the recommended spacing of 3 metres by 3 metres, you can plant approximately 450 apple trees per acre. Proper pruning, irrigation, fertilization, and orchard management are essential for achieving maximum yields.
A mature, well-managed orchard can produce 20–40 tonnes of apples per acre annually. Farm-gate prices typically range between eighty and one hundred and fifty Kenyan shillings per kilogram, depending on fruit quality and market demand.
This means one acre of apples has the potential to generate between one point six million and six million Kenyan shillings in gross income per year. Actual returns depend on tree age, production costs, orchard management, yields, and access to reliable markets.
For the best results, apples should be planted in deep, fertile, well-drained soils with a soil pH of 5.5–6.8. They perform well in cool to moderate climates, especially in Nyeri, Nyandarua, Murang'a, Kiambu, Embu, Meru, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kericho, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Kisii.
Another key to successful apple farming is pollination. Fuji and Granny Smith complement each other as pollination partners, improving fruit set, fruit size, and overall orchard productivity. Planting both varieties together can significantly increase yields.
Besides their profitability, apples are packed with nutrients. They are rich in Vitamin C, dietary fibre, antioxidants, and potassium, supporting heart health, digestion, immunity, and overall wellness. As more consumers choose healthier diets, demand for locally grown apples continues to rise.
If you're planning to establish a commercial orchard, Fuji and Granny Smith are excellent choices. They offer early fruiting, premium-quality fruits, excellent shelf life, strong market demand, and outstanding profit potential.
