LYRICS “You got your side?” “Yeah… I got it.” You said, “Mind the doorframe.” I said, “Watch your hand.” Backin’ our old kitchen table out of everything we’d planned. Borrowed truck, worn-out clutch, box tape on my jeans, Half our life in cardboard where the couch had always been. Plant cut hours, rent went up; the math quit addin’ right, You packed plates, I paced the place, pretendin’ I was fine. Pale square on the wall where our wedding picture hung, Kept starin’ at that empty nail like it knew what I’d done. Said, “I should’ve seen it comin’. Should’ve saved a little more.” You said, “Babe, we’ll talk about it. Help me get this through the door.” Table leg caught the threshold; hands slick, losin’ grip, You took the heavy end before I told you, “It’s gon’ slip.” Got it tied down in that pickup; couldn’t look you in the eye, Said, “I’m sorry, darlin’. You deserved a better life.” You brushed the dust off of my shirt, said, “Look at me a sec— I married you, you hardhead. We ain’t finished livin’ yet.” You took the heavy end when my hands gave out, Your turn to breathe—let me carry it now. If it gets too much, we can trade again, That’s how we love—we take the heavy end. Tuesday at the laundromat, last quarters in the tray, Interview at eight; we were practicin’ what you’d say. “Tell me ’bout yourself,” I read; you laughed, “Well, I’m a mess,” Kept stitchin’ up my torn cuff while the dryer spun your dress. Made it halfway through an answer, then you couldn’t say the rest, That needle stopped; you sat there with my shirt against your chest. Said, “I know it’s gonna work. I just don’t know quite when. I’m so tired of bein’ brave, then bein’ brave again.” All them times you said, “We got this,” I just took you at your word, So busy hearin’ “We’ll be fine,” I never heard the hurt. Set the questions on the washer, slid my chair up by your knee, Said, “You don’t owe me a smile. You can fall apart with me.” You leaned against my shoulder, let the whole room hum awhile, Then asked me for another question, gave a crooked little smile. “Tell me ’bout yourself.” You said, “I’m good at startin’ over.” Said, “Reckon you’re the best I’ve seen,” and pulled you closer. You took the heavy end when my hands gave out, Your turn to breathe—let me carry it now. If it gets too much, we can trade again, That’s how we love—we take the heavy end. “You ain’t gotta fix it all tonight. Just sit here with me.” So much I couldn’t do. But I could do that. Six months later, new address, still rentin’, still a grind, Same old kitchen table, same four dents along the side. Two flights up, that narrow turn, you braced yourself again, I said, “Hang on, swap me places. Let me take the heavy end.” You were workin’ days by then; I wasn’t home till dawn, Some weeks a note beside the stove was all we passed along. You wrapped my lunch in foil, wrote, “Be careful on your way,” I wrote, “Wake me when you’re home. I wanna hear about your day.” Put our picture back above the table, crooked by a hair, You said, “Leave it. Looks like us.” I laughed and left it there. Still got bills across that table, still a wobbly kitchen chair, But when one of us says, “I’m scared,” there’s someone sittin’ there. You took the heavy end when my hands gave out, Your turn to breathe—let me carry it now. If it gets too much, we can trade again, That’s how we love—we take the heavy end. “You got your side?” “Yeah. And I got you.” Song & written lyrics: https://suno.com/song/6b323f2c-3f6e-4... #GrantZukel #SouthernRap #SharedStrength
