I’ve Had Enough of the Cartoon Community [and Fandoms] (2/4): Gatekeeping

It’s time that we actually discuss about the one thing in animation that’s having the biggest downfall that no one’s talking about, and that’s the fandom. Often referred to as the Cartoon Community, animation fans have become one of the biggest detriments of the medium where their toxicity and bad behavior have become increasingly unbearable. In this second part, I talk about how the fandom has devolved into a group of gatekeepers with their Animation is Cinema mantra, showing how their behavior makes them too entitled, give them a limited definition of what is indie animation, their dependence on nostalgia, how they treat animators, and much more. 0:00 Intro 1:44 Populism is Taking Over the Fandom 4:28 They Don’t Understand What’s Indie Animation 10:39 Award Season brings out their Worst 13:17 The “Animation is Cinema” Posts 17:24 The Cartoon Community is a Small Community 23:21 Taking Fan Theories Too Far 25:26 They Watch More Who Says What about Cartoons than the Cartoons Themselves 28:42 When Nostalgia Becomes Problematic 31:51 Change is the Enemy of Nostalgia 34:52 How Me & Mr. Enter are Still Seen as Clowns 39:29 How Nostalgia Fuels the Hate for the Live-Action Remakes 41:48 When Nostalgia caused Backlash towards DreamWorks 48:50 They Don’t Support Animators 1:01:17 Indie Creators get treated worse from fans than Mainstream Animators 1:03:23 The Harassment that Gooseworx Received 1:06:41 The Toxic Discourse of VivziePop 1:09:57 Harassment is becoming Increasingly Common in the Cartoon Community 1:12:30 Outro Special thanks to Chris Etrata for helping me with gathering the screenshots for my talking points in the video.
