On the night of February 1st, 1959, nine experienced hikers abandoned their tent on a remote mountainside in the northern Ural Mountains.
Their tent had been cut open from the inside. Their boots, clothing and supplies were left behind. Footprints led down the mountain toward the forest — but none of them would return alive.
In this episode of Northern Archives, we retrace the Dyatlov Pass incident from the beginning: who the hikers were, their final journey into the Urals, the discovery of their abandoned tent, the search for the nine missing hikers, the strange injuries found during the investigation, and the theories that have attempted to explain what happened that night.
From a slab avalanche and extreme mountain weather to infrasound and speculation surrounding Soviet military activity, each explanation seems to answer part of the mystery. But one question has remained for more than sixty years:
What made nine experienced hikers believe leaving their tent was safer than staying inside?
Northern Archives explores unsolved mysteries, unexplained events, true crime, strange history, folklore and the stories that refuse to stay buried.
