India wants to move beyond assembling and testing electronics and build a much larger semiconductor ecosystem at home. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said India should increasingly design and manufacture chips for cars, two-wheelers, televisions, refrigerators and critical power infrastructure over the next five years. The ambition goes far beyond building semiconductor fabs. India is trying to develop the entire chip supply chain, from chip design and intellectual property to silicon wafers, semiconductor equipment, chemicals, materials, fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging, research and skilled talent. At the centre of this strategy is Semicon 2.0, which expands India's semiconductor programme into areas including manufacturing equipment, materials, R&D and talent.
