Why does anyone live in Canada’s northernmost town, where the sun disappears for months and basic groceries can cost a fortune? I explore the geography, history, and enduring Inuit community of Grise Fiord—and why the honest answer is more complicated, and more hopeful, than it first appears. I’m Walt Fraser, a retired geology professor and park warden. In this video, I travel through the story of Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island, from its extreme Arctic setting to the government-led relocation of Inuit families in 1953. I examine the promises they were given, the hardships they faced, and the resilience that transformed an imposed settlement into a community people call home. #GriseFiord #Nunavut #CanadianArctic #InuitHistory #EllesmereIsland #Canada
