India’s development story is often measured through income, consumption, smartphones, cars, airports, digital payments, and infrastructure. But economic growth does not automatically guarantee dignity. A person can have more purchasing power and still feel powerless when dealing with a hospital, university, or government office.
The everyday experiences can be small: repeatedly visiting an office for a certificate, needing a recommendation to get information, waiting at multiple counters, or dealing with a system that treats your time as if it has no value. When these experiences happen repeatedly, the issue becomes bigger than poor service. It becomes a question of whether the institution recognizes you as an equal citizen.
But dignity is not about getting special treatment. It is about equal treatment. A fair institution should offer predictable processes, clear information, reasonable access, accountability and a genuine remedy when something goes wrong. And the same question applies to us: if we demand dignity from institutions, are we willing to give the same dignity to people with less power than us?
