11 hours hiking Huangshan 🇨🇳⛰️
We started at 6:30am at the bottom of the mountain with one goal: hike Huangshan from bottom to top, explore as much of the mountain as possible, and make it back down on our own legs.
What followed was 11 hours of endless stairs, misty peaks, spectacular views, tired legs, questionable decisions, and some very good company.
Huangshan (黄山), or the Yellow Mountains, is one of China's most famous mountain ranges, known for its dramatic granite peaks, pine trees and sea of clouds. Even with the weather constantly changing around us, the scenery was incredible.
We hiked most of the route, taking one funicular along the way to save some time and reach another part of the mountain. Unfortunately, bad weather meant we couldn't climb Tiandu Peak (天都峰), so I already have a reason to come back.
If you're planning your own trip to Huangshan:
🥾 You don't have to hike from the bottom. Cable cars can take you much higher up.
⏰ If you want to hike, start EARLY. We started at 6:30am and used pretty much the entire day.
🌅 You can stay overnight at the top if you want to see sunrise and explore the mountain over two days.
🚫 Avoid weekends and Chinese public holidays if possible. Huangshan can get extremely crowded.
🍽️ And after 11 hours of hiking, there was only one appropriate ending: 臭鳜鱼 (stinky mandarin fish) and 毛豆腐 (hairy tofu), two local Anhui specialties.
This was one of my favourite days during my two weeks travelling around China, and definitely one my legs won't forget.
Tiandu Peak, I'll be back. 🇨🇳
