I came up from Dapuqiao metro station just after dark and walked in through Lane 210: narrow alleys strung with red lanterns, craft shops and souvenir stalls still open, tea rooms and small bars, snack counters, and street artists drawing portraits at their easels. The lanes are barely two people wide in places, and the crowd keeps flowing both ways — out onto Taikang Road and back in again.
