The Four Musicians of Bremen (1922) is a silent animated short produced at Walt Disney’s Laugh-O-Gram Studio, loosely adapted from the Brothers Grimm tale. It was part of the studio’s early series of modernized fairy-tale cartoons, created before Disney adopted cel animation.
It was technically modest but inventive for its time: Disney and his team photographed pencil drawings on paper frame by frame, using exaggerated physical comedy, elastic character movement, and title cards to shape the narrative. Like other Laugh-O-Grams, surviving prints often feature later-added piano or orchestral accompaniment, reflecting how these shorts were originally screened with live music.
The story follows a dog, cat, rooster, and donkey who are cast out by their owners and band together, using their musical talents and slapstick antics to outsmart the human antagonists they encounter.
