Everyone remembers the gadget. Almost nobody remembers the franchise quarterback. Kordell Stewart came out of Colorado with one of the most famous throws in college football history and an arm the NFL couldn't ignore. So the Pittsburgh Steelers turned him into "Slash" — a highlight-reel weapon at receiver, running back, and quarterback all at once. The nickname was electric. It was also a cage. When they finally handed him the offense, he delivered a season no quarterback in NFL history had ever produced. And in 2001 he went 13-3, earned the AFC's top seed, made the Pro Bowl, won team MVP, and drew votes for league MVP. One playoff loss later, Pittsburgh benched him for Tommy Maddox and let him walk. This is the story of a dual-threat quarterback the league would fall in love with a decade too late, and a franchise that could never decide whether to let him be a quarterback at all.
