On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public as a free research preview. Ever since, one question keeps coming up: will AI take my job? Nearly four years later, the data says something quieter, and maybe scarier for beginners: fewer first jobs for young workers in AI-exposed work, not mass firings across the whole economy (at least so far). In this video: Stanford's August 2026 update (U.S. payroll data through June 2026): employment of workers aged 22-25 in AI-exposed jobs is 19% below where it would be if it had kept pace with young workers in less-exposed jobs. Experienced workers show no comparable gap. Why the gap comes from slower hiring, not a wave of firings. The Dallas Fed: even if all of that young-worker decline turned into unemployment, it would add only about a tenth of a percentage point to the overall rate. A 41-country study: at offices that adopted generative AI, the junior share of employment was 1.9 percentage points lower by March 2026, mostly because senior employment grew (+6.7%). What these numbers do NOT prove. Honesty note: these are working papers and early research, not final verdicts. The authors do not claim AI definitely caused these changes. The 19% figure is U.S. payroll data; the 41-country result covers foreign offices of AI-adopting companies, not every young worker everywhere. Things can change as new data arrives.
