Brian Cox uncovers the relentless in-and-out grind that marked his great-grandfather Patrick McCann as a “malingerer.” Fern Britton confronts the Anatomy Act and a chilling dilemma faced by her ancestor, while discovering how Friend Carter defied stigma even in death. Barbara Taylor Bradford learns why her mother’s secret began at Ripon Workhouse—and how shame forged determination. It’s a story of separation, labels, and quiet resistance that still echoes today.
