Both engines were still running. The runway was ahead. Yet British Airways Flight 38 could not produce the thrust it needed to reach it.
On 17 January 2008, a Boeing 777-200ER arriving from Beijing lost thrust on its final approach to London Heathrow. It touched down 330 metres short of runway 27L. All 152 people aboard survived.
Between Frames follows the flight from the cold cruise over Asia to the final seconds above Heathrow, then examines the hidden mechanism investigators uncovered: ice formed from trace water in the fuel, released through the system and restricting flow at the fuel/oil heat exchangers.
Using Microsoft Flight Simulator footage, animated technical explanations and accident photographs, this documentary explores:
• Why the engines kept running but failed to respond with enough thrust.
• How ice could restrict fuel flow while the jet fuel remained liquid.
• The changing flight path, flap selection and final cockpit actions.
• The impact, evacuation and investigation.
