In 1968, four broke musicians recorded a sprawling 17-minute jam whose iconic title, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, was nothing more than frontman Doug Ingle muttering "In the Garden of Eden" through a haze of cheap red wine. The track catapulted Iron Butterfly to multi-platinum superstardom overnight, but the band was completely unprepared for the weight of their sudden fame. After getting upstaged on tour by an emerging Led Zeppelin, infamously missing Woodstock over a demanding telegram, and losing their fortunes to crippling tax debts, the group fractured beyond repair, leaving Ingle to work as a house painter while his organ riffs still echoed across classic rock radio.
