projection of line in engineering drawing Projections of Line: Case 1: Line parallel to both HP and VP: When a line is parallel to one of the reference planes, its projection on the reference plane to which it is parallel is a line of True Length. So in this case front view and top view of line will be a straight line of true length. Case 2: Line inclined to HP and parallel to VP: When a line is inclined to one of the reference planes, its projection on the reference plane to which it is inclined is a line of Reduced Length or Apparent Length. So in this case top view of line will be a straight line of reduced length or apparent length. But front view will be a straight line of true length as line is parallel to VP. Case 3: Line inclined to VP and parallel to HP: As line is inclined to VP so, front view will be a straight line of reduced length or apparent length. But top view of line will be a straight line of true length as line is parallel to HP. Case 4: Line perpendicular to HP and parallel to VP: When a line is perpendicular to one of the reference planes, its projection on the reference plane to which it is perpendicular is a POINT. So in this case, the top of line will be a point. But front view of line will be a straight line of true length as line is parallel to VP. Case 5: Line perpendicular to VP and parallel to HP: As line is perpendicular to VP, so, front view will be a point. But top view will be a straight line of true length as line is parallel to HP.
