Can you keep a clownfish in a 5-gallon tank, or is that just asking for trouble? Most reef keepers recommend at least a 20-gallon aquarium for clownfish. But is that minimum tank size really necessary, or is there more to the story? In this video, I’m adding a captive-bred ocellaris clownfish from Matthew’s Reef to my daughter’s 5-gallon nano reef tank, and I know this decision might raise a few eyebrows. I’ve been keeping clownfish for over 16 years, including a group of 30 in a single aquarium. One thing I’ve noticed is how closely clownfish can associate with a particular area or host. But does that mean a five-gallon aquarium provides enough space? We’re looking at the real challenges of keeping a clownfish in a small saltwater aquarium, including: Clownfish minimum tank size and swimming behavior Water quality and stability in a 5-gallon reef tank Ocellaris clownfish behavior and territorial aggression Nano reef tank filtration and maintenance Whether a 5-gallon aquarium can realistically meet a clownfish’s long-term needs I’m not claiming that five gallons is enough for every clownfish. This is the beginning of an ongoing observation, and I’ll be watching the fish’s behavior, feeding, growth, and overall health as things progress. What’s your opinion? Is a 5-gallon tank too small for a clownfish, or do you think the standard 20-gallon recommendation deserves a closer look? Drop your thoughts in the comments. I’m genuinely interested in hearing from reef keepers on both sides.
