Used Caravan Buying Guide: 7 Checks Before You Pay in Europe

Buying a used caravan in Europe? Before you pay a deposit, use these 7 checks to spot warning signs, ask better questions, and know when to call a professional. This beginner-friendly guide covers: • Chassis number, ownership documents and service history • Damp, window seals and hidden water damage • Floor, bodywork and chassis condition • Tyres, hitch, brakes and road lights • Tow-car compatibility, loaded weight and payload • Water, heating, gas and electrical systems • Independent inspections and written purchase terms This guide is about TOWABLE caravans, not motorhomes. Rules for registration, importing, towing, driving licences and buyer protections vary across Europe. Verify the requirements in your own country and every country you plan to visit. A viewing checklist is not a professional safety inspection. Have gas, mains electrics, brakes and structural concerns checked by appropriately qualified professionals. Never work beneath an unsupported caravan or attempt DIY gas testing.
