I compare several energy efficient dog doors and explain what actually matters when choosing one for a heated or air conditioned home:
Ranger Pet Doors for insulated construction, magnetic perimeter seals, cellular PVC framing, thermal camera footage, and published whole-door air leakage testing.
PetSafe Extreme Weather for a more accessible price, three flaps, an insulated center section, magnetic seals, and a slide-in closing panel for additional weather protection.
Ideal Pet Ruff Weather for its two-flap design with about 3 inches of airspace between the flaps, creating a layer of relatively still air to help slow heat loss.
Endura for a flexible flap designed to perform in very cold temperatures, adjustable magnetic resistance, wind ratings up to 50 mph, single and double flap options, and a lifetime residential warranty.
I also explain why insulation and air leakage are two different parts of dog door efficiency, and why energy efficiency claims from different brands are not always directly comparable. For my own setup in Michigan, with a 200 lb dog and a dog door opening directly into a heated living space, I put particular weight on how well the entire door seals once closed.
