I Felt Like I Was on Mars! | Exploring High Rock & Black Rock Deserts

Three nights exploring the vast and remote deserts of northern Nevada from the colorful landscapes of the High Rock Desert and Soldier Meadows Hot Springs to a night spent camping on the Black Rock Playa. With very little talking and mostly natural sounds, this trip was all about slowing down, taking in the incredible colors and scale of the desert, and experiencing a landscape that at times felt more like Mars than Earth. Leaving Oregon, I headed south into the High Rock Desert for two nights before making my way toward the Black Rock Desert. Along the way, I explored the area around Soldier Meadows, soaked in the hot springs, and took in some of the most peaceful and isolated landscapes I’ve experienced. The vastness of this place is difficult to put into words. Standing out there with almost nothing around you has a strange way of making you feel very small but in the best possible way. The final night was spent camping directly on the Black Rock Playa, surrounded by nothing but open space, distant mountains, and an incredible sunset. This is a quiet one.
