The red wine dripped from my daughter Maya's chin like fresh blood on fresh snow staining her white silk blouse in a grotesque map of humiliation. The dining room of the Sterling estate was silent save for the dripping sound and the terrified whimper of my twelve year old grandson Leo. I looked at Preston Sterling the man holding the empty crystal goblet and then I looked at Brad my son-in-law. I waited for Brad to stand up. I waited for him to defend his wife. instead he laughed. A cold cruel sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. Thanks Dad he chuckled sipping his own drink maybe that will finally teach her some respect. I felt the leather of my chair creak as I gripped it. They thought I was just Elijah the quiet old black man who spent his days gardening in a run down house on the edge of town. They thought I was invisible. They had no idea that the man sitting at the end of their table was the silent owner of the debt that kept the roof over their heads. I stood up slowly adjusted my tie and pulled out my old flip phone. It was time to remind them who really owned the ground they walked on.
