Today, we honor the remarkable Sandra “Puma” Jones, a trailblazing Jamaican-American reggae singer who left an indelible mark on music and activism. Born on October 5, 1953, in Columbia, South Carolina, USA, Sandra Jones would later rise to global prominence as a member of the legendary reggae group BlackUhuru. Though she tragically passed away in 1990, her legacy continues to inspire fans worldwide, especially on this special day, which would have been her 71st birthday. Before stepping into the limelight, Sandra Jones was a scholar and a woman deeply interested in African culture and social justice. She graduated from Columbia University, earning a degree in anthropology. Her academic background, particularly her studies of African heritage, would later influence her approach to music, as she sought to highlight issues of race, identity, and oppression. Sandra’s journey into music began in the mid-1970s when she traveled to Jamaica and immersed herself in the reggae scene. While working as a social worker, she balanced her passion for activism with her love for music. It was during this time that she earned the nickname “Puma,” due to her agile dance moves and energetic stage presence. In 1979, Puma Jones joined Black Uhuru, one of the most influential reggae bands of all time. Her arrival brought a new dynamic to the group, as she was the first female vocalist to be part of the lineup. Her powerful harmonies and distinct voice perfectly complemented the iconic lead vocals of Michael Rose and the deep, soulful bass of Duckie Simpson. Jones’s contributions helped Black Uhuru become the first reggae band to win a Grammy Award in 1985 for Best Reggae Album with Anthem. Puma’s spiritual energy and politically charged lyrics contributed greatly to Black Uhuru’s international success, as the band’s message resonated with listeners around the world. 🔹Key Albums with Black Uhuru:🔹 • Sinsemilla (1980) • Red (1981) • Chill Out (1982) • Anthem (1983) These albums, defined by their heavy rhythms, conscious lyrics, and mesmerizing harmonies, solidified Black Uhuru’s place in the annals of reggae history. Puma’s performances on tracks like “Sponji Reggae” and “What is Life” are forever etched in the hearts of fans. Throughout her career with Black Uhuru, Puma Jones collaborated with some of reggae’s most iconic producers, including Sly and Robbie, who produced many of Black Uhuru’s greatest albums. Their innovative “rockers” rhythm style, combined with Puma’s soulful delivery, propelled the group to international fame. In addition to her work with Black Uhuru, Puma also collaborated with artists and producers outside the reggae world, showing her versatility and passion for different musical forms. Despite her success, Puma’s career was cut tragically short when she was diagnosed with cancer in the late 1980s. In 1990, at the age of 36, Sandra “Puma” Jones passed away, leaving behind a legacy of revolutionary music, spiritual depth, and unwavering activism. Even in her final days, she remained committed to the causes she held dear, particularly the empowerment of Black people and the fight against inequality. Although her time on earth was brief, the impact she made on the reggae community and the world continues to be felt today. Puma Jones is remembered not only for her contributions to Black Uhuru but also for her powerful voice that spoke for the voiceless, her fight for justice, and her dedication to promoting African culture. Honoring a Queen 👑🕊️ As we commemorate Sandra “Puma” Jones on what would have been her 71st birthday, we are reminded of her radiant spirit and the courage she exhibited through her music. Her voice was not just heard—it was felt—by all who listened, and today, her influence remains alive in reggae and beyond. Let’s take a moment to celebrate her life, listen to the music she helped create, and keep her message of love, unity, and resistance burning strong. Rest in Power, Queen Puma.
