(As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.) Apple just dropped the iPhone 18 Pro, and honestly, it looks like a very serious piece of hardware. It’s got a six point three inch display, twelve gigabytes of RAM, and a new A20 Pro chip. That chip is built on a two nanometer process, which is tiny. So tiny that I’m worried it might get lost in my pocket. It’s also vapor cooled, which is a fancy way of saying it won’t turn your hand into a warm potato when you’re trying to play a game. The camera is the real star here. It’s a forty eight megapixel main sensor with a variable aperture. That means you can actually control the depth of field. It’s like having a pro camera lens, but without the heavy bag or the pretentious posture. Apple says it’s purpose built for AI workloads, and the new Siri is more conversational. It’s less like a command line and more like a friend who actually listens. Or maybe just a friend who talks a lot. I haven’t met the new Siri yet, so I’m keeping my expectations at a reasonable, low level. Let’s talk about the battery. The standard Pro model gets a decent boost, but the Pro Max is where things get wild. It offers up to six more hours of video playback than the last model. That’s a lot of time to watch things you probably don’t need to watch. It’s ripe for the person who hates charging cables. If you’re the type who checks your phone every five seconds, this battery is your new best friend. It’s more reliable than most of my New Year’s resolutions. Now, the price. It starts at one thousand one hundred ninety nine dollars. That’s a lot of money for a rectangle of glass and metal. But you can get up to eight hundred eighty five dollars off if you trade in an older iPhone. So if you’re still using an iPhone 8 Plus, you’re basically getting a discount on your past choices. It’s available in burgundy, glacier, and silver. Burgundy is a bold move. It’s like wearing a tuxedo to a barbecue. It’s either a statement or a mistake, and I’m not sure which one I am. Who should buy this? If you’re on an iPhone 12 or older, this is a massive leap. The performance is unmatched, and the camera is genuinely good. If you bought the iPhone 17 Pro last year, though, you might want to sit tight. The upgrades are real, but they’re not earth shattering. It’s a bit green for the early adopter who just spent a fortune. The trade off is the size. It’s a standard Pro, not the Max. So you get the power without the heft. It’s a good balance. But if you need the biggest screen possible, you’re looking at the Pro Max, which costs one thousand two hundred ninety nine dollars. That’s a hundred dollars more for a bigger screen and a longer battery. It’s a fair trade, but it’s still a lot of cash. My verdict? It’s ripe. If you want the best iPhone Apple has ever made, this is it. It’s fast, it’s smart, and it takes great photos. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best in the orchard. Subscribe to Mac Reviews.
