What is the real difference between Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), Systems & Methods, and Quality Management?
And how do these responsibilities work together inside a real manufacturing organization?
Early in my career, I moved from a relatively structured Quality Control environment in the edible oil industry to a company managing three food manufacturing factories.
The factories produced canned foods, sauces, pickles, preserved vegetables, and tomato paste.
I was expected to manage Quality Control. But I soon discovered that the challenge was much bigger than inspecting products or reviewing laboratory results.
Many processes depended on individual experience and informal communication. Procedures were missing or inconsistent, responsibilities were unclear, and the organization lacked an integrated management system.
Then I was given another responsibility: Systems & Methods.
One real production incident helped me understand what these different quality functions actually mean.
A batch of canned products was supposed to remain in quarantine for 15 days before release. The required quarantine period was not properly followed, and microbiological testing and documentation did not provide sufficient assurance.
Later, some products developed spoilage and swelling.
That incident raised four different questions:
Quality Control (QC):
Is the product conforming or nonconforming? What is its actual status, and can it be released?
Quality Assurance (QA):
Why did the problem happen, and how can we prevent it from happening again?
Systems & Methods:
How should the quarantine, testing, approval, and product-release processes be designed, documented, and controlled?
Quality Management:
Is the entire quality system effective, and is it helping the organization improve?
In this video, I explain these four perspectives through practical examples from food manufacturing.
What you'll learn:
The practical differences between QC, QA, Systems & Methods, and Quality Management
How to identify, segregate, test, and manage nonconforming products
Why corrective actions must address causes and be verified for effectiveness
How to design a controlled quarantine and product-release workflow
How to define responsibilities, approval authority, procedures, and required records
What a quarantine entry form, monitoring record, and product release form should contain
Why documenting a procedure is not the same as implementing an effective process
How quality objectives, customer complaints, internal audits, and process performance help evaluate a QMS
How ISO 9001 provides a framework for managing processes, responsibilities, risks, performance, and continual improvement
This video is for Quality Control professionals, Quality Assurance teams, Systems & Methods specialists, Quality Managers, production managers, process owners, auditors, and anyone interested in building a practical Quality Management System.
The responsibilities may overlap, and organizational structures may differ, but each perspective contributes something important.
Quality is not created only at the end of the production line. It begins with the way the organization designs, controls, and improves its processes.**
