🍺 HISTORY DOWN THE PUB 🍺
What if the quiet Suffolk countryside you know today was once crossed by a Roman highway?
In this episode of History Down the Pub, we leave the modern world behind and follow the forgotten Roman road from Long Melford, through Bildeston, and onwards to Coddenham — a journey of around 16½ miles and nearly 2,000 years of history.
Along the way, we uncover the story of Margary 34a, one of the Roman roads that once connected the communities and military sites of Suffolk.
We’ll explore:
🏛️ The Roman settlement of Combretovium at Coddenham
🛣️ How and why the Romans built their roads
⚔️ The role these roads played in moving soldiers and supplies
🌾 The remarkable traces of the road still hidden within the Suffolk landscape
🏺 Roman archaeology, coins, pottery and other discoveries
🪞 The fascinating Roman cremation and bronze mirror discovered near Coddenham
🗺️ The connection between the roads at Bildeston
🌳 How the Roman landscape slowly disappeared beneath fields, lanes and hedgerows
And throughout the journey, we’ll imagine the road through the eyes of one fictional Roman soldier…
Dave.
Dave never existed — as far as we know!
But the road he walks certainly did.
So pour yourself a pint, settle in, and join me as we follow a road that was already ancient long before the villages and country lanes we know today came into existence.
Because sometimes…
the best history is hiding right beneath our feet.
🍺 This is History Down the Pub.
