A vessel from the lost era designed to patrol the Klingon Border and a backup in case the Khitomer Accords are breached. Full Lore: In the aftermath of the Khitomer Accords and the events surrounding the Khitomer peace negotiations, the United Federation of Planets entered a period of cautious optimism. For the first time in generations, the possibility of lasting peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire seemed within reach. Starfleet, however, was not convinced that peace had been secured. Reports of Klingon military exercises, unauthorized border crossings, and the activities of extremist factions began reaching Starfleet Command with increasing frequency. Starfleet intelligence warned that, should relations deteriorate, the Federation's extensive frontier would be vulnerable. The Federation simply did not possess enough modern warships to maintain a strong defensive presence along every sector of the Klingon border. Starfleet Command authorized the Stingray Project, a program intended to produce a new generation of small, heavily armed patrol vessels capable of operating independently along the frontier. Its compact hull required considerably fewer materials than a traditional cruiser, while standardized components allowed Starfleet shipyards to produce the vessels rapidly and economically. Systems were designed with ease of maintenance in mind, allowing a Stingray to remain operational even at remote frontier facilities with limited industrial support. Despite its modest size, the Stingray carried a surprisingly formidable weapons suite. Multiple phaser arrays and forward-mounted photon torpedo launchers gave the destroyer enough firepower to engage Klingon raiders and other hostile vessels. Reinforced structural systems and upgraded shielding allowed it to withstand punishment that would normally cripple a vessel of its size. Stingray destroyers were assigned to frontier starbases, colonial systems, and strategically important outposts. Operating in pairs or small patrol groups, they monitored border traffic, escorted civilian vessels, responded to distress calls, and intercepted unauthorized incursions.
