Her Online Boyfriend Was Actually a 48-Year-Old Predator

In 2006, 14-year-old Carly Ryan believed she was building a relationship with an 18-year-old musician named Brandon Kane, but the person behind the profile had spent months studying her interests, earning her trust, and creating an identity designed specifically to appeal to her. Even after Carly’s mother became concerned about an older man introduced as Brandon’s father, the connection Carly thought she had with Brandon remained intact. Investigators would later uncover hundreds of false identities, troubling online conversations, and evidence of just how much planning had gone into reaching Carly beyond the safety of her computer screen. The case also raised difficult questions about early internet safety, online grooming, and how Carly herself was portrayed after her death. Allison walks us through the investigation and the details that showed how carefully the deception had been built around Carly. *Disclaimer:* This video uses a selected clip from a video published by the *FilmRise True Crime* YouTube channel about the case of **Carly Ryan**.
