In honor of Sonny Curtis, who passed away last week. He wrote this song and played the lead guitar
After Buddy Holly passed away in February 1959, The Crickets continued as a band with Sonny Curtis leading the group on vocals and guitar, and with Earl Sinks as their lead singer. I Fought The Law was recorded in May 1959 and released by The Crickets in 1960, but was not popularized until 1966 by the Bobby Fuller Four. And later by punk groups like The Clash and Green Day
Sonny Curtis wrote it and played a 1950's Sunburst Fender Stratocaster, just like Buddy Holly's ones. He also overdubbed an acoustic guitar part, likely on a Martin D-18
Sonny later had success as a session player and songwriter. The Crickets backed The Everly Brothers on tour, Sonny played the lead guitar on their hit single Cathy's Clown, and he wrote their 1961 single 'Walk Right Back'. He also wrote and sang the theme song to The Mary Tyler Moore Show- Love is All Around
Jerry Allison and Joe B Mauldin (Buddy Holly's Crickets) played drums and bass, respectively. And Earl Sinks sang lead vocals. The song was released on their 1960 album In Style With the Crickets, which I'd highly recommend listening to
I'm playing my Squier Classic Vibe 1950's Stratocaster into my 1965 Fender Bassman. And my 1969 Martin 00-18 acoustic guitar
Thanks for watching!
