Chicken feed can become one of the biggest recurring costs of keeping a flock. But there are plants you can establish once that can continue producing useful food for your chickens year after year.
In this video, I’m showing you one of my favorite old-fashioned methods: planting a productive perennial tree that chickens can forage from season after season.
We’ll look at why I like this approach, where I’d plant it, how to protect it while it’s young, when chickens can begin foraging around it, and how I use what it produces as part of a broader feeding system.
The idea isn’t to eliminate nutritionally balanced poultry feed overnight. Laying hens still need the right overall nutrition. The goal is to make your land produce more of what your flock can use, reducing waste and potentially lowering the amount of supplemental feed you need to buy.
Plant once. Let nature do the growing. Let your chickens help with the harvesting.
