Lesson 1: What Is Grammar?
Grammar is the system of rules that helps us use a language correctly. It teaches us how to arrange words and create clear, meaningful sentences.
For example:
“Tariq works in an office.”
This sentence is correct because the words are arranged properly.
However:
“Tariq in an office works.”
This arrangement sounds unnatural in English.
A basic English sentence usually follows this order:
Subject + Verb + Object
For example:
“Sarah reads books.”
• “Sarah” is the subject. She performs the action.
• “Reads” is the verb. It describes the action.
• “Books” is the object. It receives the action.
Grammar also helps us express time.
“I work every day.”
This sentence describes a regular activity.
“I worked yesterday.”
This sentence describes a past activity.
“I will work tomorrow.”
This sentence describes a future activity.
Grammar includes several important areas, such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and sentence structure.
Consider this sentence:
“The friendly manager answered the question politely.”
• “Manager” is a noun.
• “Friendly” is an adjective.
• “Answered” is a verb.
• “Politely” is an adverb.
Good grammar makes speaking and writing easier to understand. It is especially important when writing emails, preparing reports, attending job interviews, or speaking with colleagues.
Do not worry about memorizing every rule immediately. Grammar improves gradually through practice, reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
Remember:
Grammar helps us put the right words in the right order.
