In this episode of the Dr. Harch Podcast, Dr. Paul Harch discusses the systemic barriers preventing hyperbaric oxygen therapy from being widely used in the treatment of traumatic brain injury, drowning injuries, stroke, and other neurological emergencies. Despite decades of research exploring the role of oxygen under pressure in treating hypoxic and ischemic brain injuries, many hospitals remain reluctant to attempt the therapy. Dr. Harch explains that the resistance often stems from medical culture, lack of training, reimbursement policies, and institutional pressure within medical societies. For generations, doctors were taught that severe brain injuries cannot be treated and must simply “heal on their own.” This belief still influences treatment decisions today. The discussion also explores practical challenges such as performing critical care inside hyperbaric chambers, ventilator limitations, physician training requirements, and hospital financial incentives. Robert Boytim’s recovery challenges the assumption that severe neurological injuries cannot improve and raises important questions about how medical systems evaluate emerging therapies. This episode is part of the documentary project Undeniable Evidence: A Father’s Fight, directed by John Salcedo of L.A. City Films.
