Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance is based on the Dragonlance novel "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", which itself was based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonlance module "Dragons of Despair". The plot is thus: "The Heroes of the Lance must go through the ruins of Xak Tsaroth to retrieve the Disks of Mishakal (the god of healing) in order to prove the existence of the True Gods that mankind has forgotten in the wake of the Cataclysm that ravaged the land of Krynn 300 years ago. However, in order to retrieve them, they must slay the ancient black dragon Khisanth, who was summoned by the Evil Goddess, Takhisis to guard them out of fear of mankind rediscovering the knowledge of the True Gods' existence." The game was first released in 1988 by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI) for computers like the Amiga and Atari ST, among others. This soundtrack is for the FM Towns version released in June 21 1990. The music was composed by Seiji Toda (who also composed the music for the NES, MSX2 and PC-98 versions), played back on Hitoshi Sakimoto's proprietary FM Sound Driver, "Terpsichorean". Despite being released on the FM Towns, a computer with the ability to playback Redbook Audio, this does not use Redbook Audio at all. It uses the FM Towns' sound chips; the Yamaha YM2612 (the same FM sound chip as in Sega's Genesis/Megadrive consoles) and the Ricoh RF5C68 (a PCM chip similar, though not identical to the RF5C164 used in Sega's CD add-on, the Sega CD/Mega CD).
