⚠️ FULL SPOILERS for Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (1811) and its screen versions (1995, 2008 and the new 2026 movie), including how they end.
Colonel Brandon was 35. Marianne was 16. In Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, the age gap is no accident, and the new Sense and Sensibility movie (2026) quietly changed it. Here are Colonel Brandon and Marianne in the book and in every version: Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet (1995), David Morrissey and Charity Wakefield (2008), Herbert Nordrum and Esmé Creed-Miles (2026), and the 1981 BBC series nobody remembers.
In this video:
• Three people in the book say the age gap out loud (one of them is Brandon himself)
• Colonel Brandon's secret: the two Elizas, and why he fell for a girl of sixteen
• Willoughby, the ward and the duel the movies love to skip
• What a 35 and 16 match meant in 1811 (and Jane Austen's own proposal)
• Sense and Sensibility 1995 vs 2008 vs 2026: which Brandon did Austen actually write?
