Las Vegas sits in a hot desert with only about four inches of local rain each year, but its water supply depends on snowmelt from the Upper Colorado River Basin. Historical data show the city’s average annual temperature rose roughly 0.8°F from the 1980s to the 2020s, a shift that exponentially increases extreme heat days over 106°F due to the urban heat island effect. Warming reduces snow albedo, exposing dark soil that absorbs energy and boosts evapotranspiration; a USGS study finds Upper Colorado River discharge drops about 9.3% per 1°C of warming. Downscaled climate models project extreme heat days rising from ~4 per year historically to 23–30 by mid‑century under RCP4.5 and 30–64 under RCP8.5, while precipitation totals remain uncertain but longer dry spells and heavier cloudbursts are expected. Despite rapid growth, Southern Nevada cut per‑capita water use 58% between 2002 and 2025, uses indoor return‑flow credits to reuse treated water, and built a deep intake and pumping station to access Lake Mead below dead‑pool level.
