From its origins as an Anglo-Saxon royal stronghold and the heart of the ancient kingdom of Bernicia, through Viking attacks, Norman rule and centuries of conflict, this incredible fortress has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in northern English history. It was here that King Oswald of Northumbria brought St Aidan from Iona, helping establish the region as an important centre of early Christianity. Centuries later, Bamburgh became a powerful Norman stronghold and royal residence, before finding itself at the centre of the Wars of the Roses. In 1464, the castle endured a devastating siege and became the first castle in England to be seriously destroyed by gunpowder during an assault. But Bamburgh survived. After centuries of changing fortunes, the castle was rescued from ruin and restored by Victorian industrialist William George Armstrong, who purchased it in 1894. Today it remains a remarkable living fortress overlooking the Northumberland coast — surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the north of England.
