Friday Sermon on the Martyrdom of Imam Husayn (RA) at Jamia Mosque, Khadro, District Sanghar
Alhamdulillah! On the blessed occasion of the 9th of Muharram, I had the honor of delivering the Friday sermon at Jamia Mosque, Khadro, District Sanghar, on the topic:
"The Martyrdom of Imam Husayn (RA): Its Purpose, Virtues, and the Qur'anic Concept of Trial and Tribulation."
I began the sermon by reciting the following profound verses from the Holy Qur'an:
«"And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth, lives, and fruits; but give glad tidings to those who remain patient—those who, when calamity befalls them, say: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.'"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155–156)»
I explained that these verses establish an eternal Qur'anic principle: Allah Almighty tests His servants through fear, hunger, financial loss, the loss of loved ones, and other hardships. Success in these trials is measured by patience (sabr), steadfastness (istiqamah), and complete submission to the will and decree of Allah.
Within this Qur'anic framework, I emphasized that the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (RA) is not merely a historical tragedy; rather, it is a living embodiment of these divine verses. At Karbala, the blessed family of the Prophet (peace be upon him) sacrificed their lives, wealth, family members, and every worldly comfort to demonstrate that when the religion of Allah, justice, and truth are at stake, a true believer does not flee from trials. Instead, he faces them with patience, unwavering faith, and contentment with the pleasure of Allah.
I further explained that the declaration, "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return," is not merely a supplication to be recited in times of grief. It is a complete statement of faith, affirming that our existence belongs to Allah and our lives are a trust from Him. Therefore, when the cause of truth and the religion of Allah demands sacrifice, offering that trust back to its Owner becomes one of the highest expressions of a believer's faith.
The congregation was also reminded that the ultimate source of truth is Allah Himself. The Holy Qur'an describes Allah as Al-Haqq (The Absolute Truth). Therefore, bearing witness to the truth is, in essence, bearing witness to Allah. Imam Husayn (RA) did not rise for personal power, political authority, or worldly gain. Rather, he stood for the preservation of Allah's religion, justice, moral integrity, and the reform of the Muslim community. For this reason, his martyrdom is rightly regarded as the Martyrdom of Truth, for through the sacrifice of his life he preserved the truth and exposed the reality of falsehood.
In conclusion, I stated that the tragedy of Karbala teaches us that a believer's true success does not lie in worldly dominance or material victory, but in remaining steadfast upon the truth. If safeguarding the truth requires sacrifice, then this is the noble path of the Prophets (peace be upon them), the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them), and, in particular, Imam Husayn (RA). The message of Karbala continues to inspire every generation to reject oppression, tyranny, injustice, and falsehood, and instead embrace patience, steadfastness, courage, and unwavering commitment to the truth.
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to understand the message of the Holy Qur'an, to draw guidance from the sincerity, patience, and steadfastness of Imam Husayn (RA), and to remain firmly committed to the truth under all circumstances. Ameen.
