Coach Greg Jones, former LSU and South Alabama head golf coach, explains why every hole should be played as a par three, how a strong wedge game helped his South Alabama team go 36 and 8 against the SEC, and the stories behind it all, from a silver watch that never arrived to walking beside Jack Nicklaus at Pinehurst.
Greg grew up as a cart boy at Skyline Country Club in Mobile, played college and pro golf, won five Sun Belt titles at South Alabama, and rebuilt the LSU program before becoming a State Farm agent and then returning to teaching. Today he is the director of instruction at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Alabama, and teaches golfers around the world through his YouTube channel.
In this episode:
Why a par four is just a par three plus one shot of transportation
The "golden opportunity zone" from 50 to 120 yards that nobody practices
Greg's three part swing: pivot, elevate, hinge
Why rhythm is the glue that holds the golf swing together
Why going for par fives in two backfires, even for Hall of Famers
Floyd Horgan's old school coaching and the story of the silver watch
