Gikan Sa Duta (From the Soil), follows a determined 16-year-old daughter of Filipino Farmers who dreams of pursuing culinary studies while witnessing her family’s daily struggles to survive. Living in a small rural community, Gwen’s mother, Isa, works tirelessly despite poor harvests, mounting debts, and the constant uncertainty brought by natural disasters. When a typhoon destroys their crops and leaves their farming cooperative with almost nothing, the family’s already fragile livelihood is pushed to the brink. Amid the devastation, Gwen encounters a volunteer who introduces her to a simple yet innovative way of transforming local produce into a nourishing meal. Inspired, she experiments with their remaining harvest of kalabasa and creates homemade noodles that delight her family. Realizing its potential, Gwen begins selling her product within the community, turning a symbol of hardship into a source of hope and income. Her initiative soon catches the attention of the volunteer, who encourages her to develop the product further for the benefit of local farmers. As Gwen shares her knowledge through community workshops, her innovation empowers fellow farmers to add value to their harvests and discover new opportunities for livelihood. What begins as one family’s fight against hunger grows into a story of resilience and cooperation. Rooted in the enduring spirit of Filipino farming communities, Gikan sa Duta celebrates how hope can emerge from the land itself. With creativity, solidarity, and perseverance, even the smallest harvest can cultivate a brighter future.
