Every time Europe tries to unify into a single EU army, Russia treats it as a massive threat. Now, Europe is on track to spend nearly half a trillion euros on defense this year, and it still can't fight as one coherent force: twenty-seven separate command chains and ammunition stocks, all still leaning on the United States for the unglamorous stuff that actually wins wars: intelligence, air refueling, and command and control.
I break down a real proposal from CSIS analyst Max Bergmann for a hybrid European army; not one flag replacing twenty-seven, but a standing 60,000-person EU force sitting alongside national militaries, and why the Pentagon quietly pushing Europe toward self-reliance makes this idea harder to dismiss than it's ever been.
