Starting in Wichita, Kansas, each card determines the direction and distance, sending me on an unpredictable journey through back roads, small towns, ghost towns, and the Flint Hills. The adventure takes me through Sedgwick, Butler, and Greenwood counties, with stops in Augusta, El Dorado, Rosalia, Cassidy, Hamilton, Virgil, Eureka, and tiny communities such as Havill, Lapland, Utopia, Quincy, and Climax. Along the way, I discover historic buildings, old schools, cemeteries, bridges, cattle brands, wild horses, and beautiful tallgrass prairie scenery. Highlights include Teter Rock, the Keeper of the Plains, and several fascinating remnants of Kansas history. With no idea where the next card will take me, the journey becomes the destination. After 27 cards and plenty of slow, rugged back-road driving, I end up far from where I started—having discovered places I might never have visited otherwise.
