The Metropole was unlike any other room in the city. Its bandstand ran behind the length of the bar itself, a boardwalk stage where a full horn section — trumpet, trombone, clarinet — and a standing drummer played almost without pause, from three in the afternoon until three in the morning. The mirrored back wall threw the light and the crowd back at itself; patrons stood shoulder to shoulder the whole length of the room, drinks in hand, the music part New Orleans, part Chicago, and part barroom chaos in the best sense. It was less a club to sit and listen in than a room to be swept along by. This video imagines that stretch of hours — the doors opening on a hot afternoon, the crowd building through the evening, the band pushing harder as the night wears on, and the long wind-down toward closing — as a single continuous arc. About the music: Every track is an original composition, generated to evoke the sound and energy of a 1955 Broadway jazz bar — swing, Dixieland-rooted horns, jump blues, and hot instrumental jazz — without using or imitating any real musician's actual recordings or performances. The 15-track score follows the Metropole's own rhythm: a bright afternoon opener, a slow sultry mid-afternoon lull, a driving evening rush, a call-and-response horn duel, a hushed late-night ballad, one last frantic surge before closing, and a gentle, piano-led fade as the doors shut. It's built to capture the feeling of being in that room for twelve straight hours, not a historical recording of any actual performance.
