Filmed June, 2023 in Seattle Washington. I learned about Marika because she was a regular poster in the Gems Facebook group. She had posted a Townes cover along with some originals— and I became a fan and follower of her music. After a while our paths crossed in Seattle, so we reached out to capture this session. The night—or maybe it was a few days, I can't quite recall—before this recording, I saw Marika perform at the Rabbit Box theatre in Seattle. The show was my first time hearing, “We Ain’t Dressin’ Japanese," and the song's story immediately had me thinking about so much more than music—about hardship I'll never know, or understand. About racial injustice in America and how unwelcoming the country is to POC...but I digress - what I'm trying to say is this song had me deep thinking, and that's what a good folk tune should do.
